GR6 (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) Titanium Alloy Pipe: Properties, Specs & Applications

GR6 is the designation for the alpha titanium alloy Ti-5Al-2.5Sn (UNS R54520), covered by ASTM B861 (seamless pipe), ASTM B338 (condenser and heat-exchanger tube) and ASTM B265 (plate, sheet and strip). It is an alpha alloy: it contains no significant beta-stabilizing elements, so it cannot be strengthened by solution treatment and aging. Instead, its properties come from solid-solution strengthening by aluminum and tin, which gives excellent low-temperature toughness and good strength retention down to cryogenic temperatures.

Chemical Composition (Weight %)

Element Al Sn Fe (max) O (max) C (max) N (max) H (max)
GR6 4.0–6.0 2.0–3.0 0.50 0.20 0.08 0.05 0.015

Because Al and Sn together exceed 6%, the titanium content of GR6 is approximately 92% - not 99%. Any purchase specification claiming "titanium content ≥ 99%" describes a commercially pure grade (Gr1–Gr4), not GR6.

Where GR6 Genuinely Excels

Cryogenic engineering: alpha alloys do not undergo ductile-to-brittle transition like ferritic steels; GR6 retains toughness at liquid-hydrogen and liquid-nitrogen temperatures, so it is used for cryogenic storage tanks, piping and valves.

Chemical processing: good resistance to seawater, chlorides and many acids makes GR6 suitable for corrosion service where higher strength than pure titanium is needed.

Marine and structural components: high strength-to-weight ratio with long-term corrosion resistance under salt spray.

Fasteners and fittings: where medium-high strength and weldability are both required.

GR6 vs GR5 (Ti-6Al-4V)

Aspect GR6 (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) GR5 (Ti-6Al-4V)
Structure Alpha Alpha-beta
Heat treatment Annealing only Annealed or solution-treated + aged
Strength High (UTS ~830 MPa annealed) Very high (UTS ~895 MPa annealed; higher after STA)
Key strength Low-temperature toughness Fatigue and elevated-temperature performance
Typical use Cryogenic, chemical, marine Aerospace structure, landing gear, engines

If your drawing calls for aircraft landing-gear components, the correct material is more likely GR5 or a high-strength steel - confirm the alloy on the drawing before ordering.

Selection and Acceptance Guidance

Confirm the grade by chemical analysis: Al 4.0–6.0%, Sn 2.0–3.0% distinguishes GR6 from all pure grades.

Request a mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemical composition, tensile and yield strength and elongation.

For cryogenic service, request additional low-temperature impact or tensile verification per your project specification.

Inspect surface quality: freedom from oxidation scale, cracks and dents; specify pickled or bright-annealed surface as required.

Welding: use matching filler (ERTi-6) and strict argon shielding; alpha alloys weld well but require clean, contamination-free procedures.

Titanium product packaging

We place great emphasis on the transportation safety and delivery quality of our products. All titanium materials are packaged using strict industrial-grade solutions: titanium tubes and bars undergo anti-rust treatment, are tightly wrapped with waterproof stretch film, and then placed in reinforced wooden or iron boxes lined with moisture-proof paper, with fillers added to prevent sliding and collisions during transportation. Titanium plates and strips are covered with protective film, fitted with edge protectors, separated layer by layer with moisture-proof paper, loaded onto sturdy wooden or steel pallets, and securely fastened with steel straps. Fine titanium wires are neatly coiled onto specialized spools and encapsulated in sealed boxes that are waterproof and dustproof. Each packaging unit is accompanied by clear product labels, material certificates, and moisture-proof indicators, ensuring that the goods remain intact, clearly labeled, and safely delivered to global customers through long-distance sea freight and multimodal transportation.
