Effective treatment of the reaction layer on the surface of titanium alloy plates and rods is crucial for ensuring that the material's physical and chemical properties meet specified standards. Three surface treatment methods are available for different processing requirements:
I. Physical and Mechanical Polishing Process
1. Sandblasting Pretreatment
Use white corundum abrasive and control the operating pressure within 0.45 MPa. The operation time is 15-30 seconds. This process primarily removes surface sand and some oxide layers. Be careful that excessive pressure can cause spark reactions and secondary contamination.
2. Pickling Finishing
An HF-HNO3 system pickling solution (HF 3-5%, HNO3 5%) is recommended. 15-30%)
Effectively removes residual reaction layers while reducing hydrogen absorption.
Also provides surface finishing, with treatment time controlled within 1-3 minutes depending on oxide layer thickness.

II. Chemical Polishing Process
Surface leveling technology based on redox reactions.
Applicable to HF-HNO3 mixed solutions (HF <10%).
Advantages: Requires no complex equipment and can process complex structural parts.
Key Process Features: Low temperature (25-35°C), short operation time (1-2 minutes).
III. Electrolytic Polishing Process
Uses an anhydrous chloride electrolyte system.
Requires anodic dissolution under low voltage conditions.
Current Technical Limitations: Treatment results for complex parts need to be optimized.
Research Directions: Improved cathode shape and the use of auxiliary cathodes.
Recommended Process Selection:
For conventionally machined parts, a combined sandblasting + pickling process is recommended, ensuring both effective treatment and cost control. Chemical polishing is suitable for processing complex, irregularly shaped parts, while electrolytic polishing is currently recommended for precision machining of small, standard parts. Parameters such as solution concentration, temperature, and treatment time must be strictly monitored during each process to ensure that the surface quality meets the requirements of standards such as ASTM B600.
