1.1 Seamless Pipe and Tube
Seamless Gr.12 product is produced from forged and extruded hollows, cold-drawn or hot-finished to size. It offers a continuous grain structure with no weld seam, which is preferred for high-pressure piping, thick-wall applications, and exchanger tubes where weld-repair risk must be eliminated. Seamless tubing per ASTM B338 is the standard choice for shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
1.2 Welded Pipe and Tube
Welded Gr.12 product is formed from strip and seam-welded (GTAW or HF-ERW), then annealed and sized. It delivers the same corrosion performance when the weld is verified by flattening, flaring and non-destructive examination per B337/B338. For large-diameter process piping, welded pipe is the economical option, and welded tube is widely used in condensers with diameters up to about 219 mm.

How to Specify Gr.12 Pipe and Tube Correctly

What is the difference between Grade 12 pipe and Grade 12 tube?
In common usage, pipe is specified by nominal bore and schedule for fluid transport (ASTM B337), while tube is specified by exact OD and wall for heat-transfer equipment (ASTM B338). The chemistry and mechanical properties of Gr.12 are the same for both.
