Titanium Forging: Defect Analysis and Optimization

Key Features and Advantages of Precision Forging

When manufacturing titanium and titanium alloy bars using precision forging, you benefit from several notable advantages:

High-Frequency Forging – The hammer operates at hundreds to thousands of strokes per minute, minimizing friction and ensuring a smooth surface with uniform internal microstructure.

Minimal Deformation Per Stroke – Each stroke has a small deformation amount with a limited contact area, reducing required press capacity and extending tool life.

Dynamic Process Adjustment – Adjustable hammer stroke accommodates various bar dimensions without frequent die changes.

High dimensional accuracy: Four hammerheads are used for synchronous constant-stroke forging to ensure product dimensional consistency.

Isothermal Forging Control – Feed rate adjustments compensate for temperature loss, maintaining stable deformation temperatures.

Axial Elongation Guidance – Arched groove hammer designs suppress circumferential stress, preventing sharp corners and cracks.

Triaxial Compressive Stress Strengthening – Enhances metal plasticity (forging ratio: pure titanium 6:1, alloy 4:1), promoting densification.

Thermal Effect Management – Excessive deformation can cause overheating and grain coarsening, which must be controlled.

Causes and Prevention of Flaws in Titanium Forgings

Common Defect Types

Internal Cracks – Often caused by uneven deformation or improper temperature control, leading to localized stress concentration.

Porosity/Inclusions – Result from inadequate raw material purity or oxidation and contamination during forging.

Process Optimization Strategies

Refined Parameter Control – Optimizing reduction per pass and forging frequency to balance thermal effects and microstructure refinement.

Material Pre-Treatment – Enhanced billet inspection and surface treatment to reduce initial defects.

Equipment Maintenance – Regular calibration of hammer alignment to prevent off-center loads that could cause defects.

Precision forging stands out as an optimal method for titanium bar production due to its efficiency and accuracy. However, continuous process refinement is essential to mitigate defects. By dynamically monitoring forging temperatures, stress distribution, and material flow, you can further enhance the quality and performance of titanium alloy forgings.

Our factory

Our factory operates a dedicated production facility equipped with modern machinery for processing titanium. We have a complete set of equipment including forging presses, hot and cold rolling mills, tube drawing and welding lines, bar & wire drawing machines, and surface treatment units. This allows us to control the production process from raw material to finished products such as sheets, plates, tubes, bars, and wires. Our workshop is capable of handling large-volume orders while maintaining consistent quality across our product range.

Titanium product packaging

Our packaging is designed for maximum security and international standards. We use tailored wooden crates for heavy plates and bars, with internal waterproof wrapping and blocking to prevent movement. Tubes and coils are securely packed in wooden boxes with reinforced edges and protective end caps. For smaller items like wires and strips, we use standard export cartons with inner plastic and moisture-proof sealing. All packages are clearly marked with product details, weight, and handling instructions to ensure safe arrival. We can also customize packing methods, such as palletization or container optimization, based on specific shipping and customer requirements.
