With economic and technological development, titanium plate applications are increasing, but surface quality issues are becoming increasingly prominent.
Titanium and titanium alloys are extremely important lightweight structural materials, widely used in aerospace, automotive engineering, biomedicine, and other fields, and have long been a hot topic in materials research. With economic and technological development, titanium plate applications are increasing, but surface quality issues are becoming increasingly prominent.
Surface defects in titanium plate can be categorized into two main types: conventional and unconventional. Conventional defects are:
1. Scratches
Causes: Surface scratches caused by rough surfaces, adhesions, sharp edges, or burrs on the guide plates, rollers, tools, and rolls during rolling; and careless operation, which can lead to collisions and scratches.
Measures: Before rolling, carefully inspect tools, guide plates, rollers, and rolls, and remove any defects promptly. Operate with care and avoid any rough pulling or bumping.

2. Metal Indentations
Causes: Burrs and slag from the edges of the rolled piece are pressed into the product surface. Action: Promptly remove burrs and foreign matter from the edges of the slab. Cracked edges and crack heads should be trimmed promptly.
3. Non-metallic indentations
Cause: Poor environmental hygiene, dust and foreign matter deposited on the workpiece surface; inadequate cleaning after pickling.
Action: Maintain good hygiene and promptly remove any adherent matter from the workpiece surface.
4. Pits and pits
Cause: Dust and foreign matter accumulated on the press plate or backing plate during press-form annealing.
Action: Promptly clean the press plate and backing plate surfaces before entering the furnace.
5. Roller marks
Cause: Severe wear on the roll surface, including pits, pitting, and scratches; the roll surface is pitted by the corners of the plate.
Action: If roller marks are detected, the rolls should be reground or replaced. Unconventional defects include:
1. Surface cracks
Causes: Substandard incoming material, incomplete removal of surface cracks or brittle getter layers on the incoming material surface, improper reduction procedures, low pass processing ratios, excessive passes, or uneven distribution of pass processing ratios.
Measures: Strictly control incoming material surface quality, rationally distribute pass processing ratios, ensure uniform slab annealing temperatures, and enhance rolling lubrication.
2. Acid spots
Causes: One is that residual acid is not rinsed away during pickling, leading to formation during drying. Another is that the surface of the plates is unevenly oxidized during stack annealing, resulting in inconsistent surface corrosion after pickling.
Measures: Ensure that the pickling is thorough, ensuring that there is no residual acid on the plate surface before drying; reduce the stack thickness to ensure uniform annealing of the plates; sanding can also be used for post-processing repairs.
