The first week of September 2026 made the input-cost story tangible. SHFE aluminum broke above ¥24,000/t and held; LME three-month aluminum closed the week near $3,318/t after a +$23 session; spot aluminum on the Yangtze benchmark printed ¥24,350/t on September 3, up ¥270 day-on-day. The LME aluminum warehouse book sat at 245,975 t - a multi-decade low - and Shanghai exchange inventories are now ten consecutive weeks of decline. Two forces are driving the floor: a softening US dollar after a surprise soft ADP print and dovish Federal Reserve signals, and tight physical supply. For CNC machined-parts buyers, the paradox is this: raw-material costs are firming, but downstream aluminum processing fees have softened and competition at the shop level remains intense. The pass-through is not yet complete - which is why the first half of September is still a buyer's window.

The dominant force is physical scarcity, not speculative demand. LME aluminum stocks at 245,975 t sit in a range last seen in the 1990s for some regional warehouses; Shanghai aluminum inventories posted a tenth straight weekly decline to roughly 391,500 t, shedding more than 12,000 t over that stretch. The cash premium on Yangtze has flipped to a slight positive (+¥15 average, range c5–b35) after running flat-to-discount through July - a clear signal that end-user buyers are stepping in. For machined-parts buyers, what matters is the line between material cost and the part quote: the aluminum-billet line on your invoice is now ~5–8% higher than the early-July baseline, on top of which processing fees are being negotiated.

LME at 245,975 t is not just a low number - it is a structural low. Combined with ten consecutive weeks of SHFE destocking, the global aluminum market is running on hand-to-mouth supply. Adding to the tightness: Guinea's wet season has kept bauxite CIF offers firm at $72–73/dmt, alumina freight from Africa has pushed toward $40/t, and alumina futures just printed a 1.33% up-day. The cost push from upstream means even if spot aluminum consolidates at current levels, the input-cost floor on the Shanghai side will not retreat meaningfully before Q4.

 

The Macro Tailwind Behind the September Move

Three macro forces are amplifying the physical-tightness story:

 

US dollar weakness. The August ADP private-payroll print came in at +38k, well below the +48k consensus and the slowest of 2026. Combined with dovish commentary from Fed governors, fed-funds futures re-priced the September hike probability down by roughly 13 percentage points. A softer dollar is mechanically supportive for dollar-priced metals and translates into stronger LME prints.

 

Treasury yields pulling back. Lower yields reinforce the dollar-weakness channel and lower the opportunity cost of holding physical commodities. Base metals broadly caught a bid, with copper, aluminum, and tin all closing higher on September 3.

 

Peak-season demand realization. Grid investment and new-energy downstream orders are trickling back. Cast-aluminum-alloy social inventory has built for four consecutive weeks - a sign that downstream smelters and processors are running, not destocking. The pace of end-demand recovery is what determines whether aluminum rallies further or consolidates.

 

What this means for the shop floor. The raw-material line is firming while the processing-fee line is still negotiable. September 3 industry reporting shows regional spot premiums softening at elevated aluminum prices - central China transacted at discounts of ¥110–150/t against the SHFE front-month, and billet processing fees were adjusted downward. Translation: your aluminum machined-part quotes in early September are absorbing higher billet cost but still carrying softer processing-fee margins as shops compete for order flow.

 

Capacity & Lead-Time Watch - Where the Recovery Is Pulling First

Equipment manufacturing is leading the recovery. The August PMI sub-index for equipment manufacturing printed at 51.4, sitting deeper in expansion than the composite 49.8. Buyers in this segment - industrial automation, robotics, instrumentation - are the ones whose quote inboxes are filling fastest at shops.

 

High-tech manufacturing reading 52.9. Even stronger than equipment manufacturing. Electronics, precision instruments, and semiconductor-adjacent hardware sit in this bucket. Tight-tolerance aluminum and stainless parts typically used here are seeing the earliest capacity-pulls.

 

Steel-plate capacity is filling first. Within metal cutting, carbon-steel plate parts (housings, brackets, structural plates used in equipment manufacturing) are the first category to queue. Aluminum parts still carry negotiation room because cast-alloy inventory is rebuilding, signaling adequate billet flow downstream.

 

Small-shop lag. The small-enterprise PMI sub-index is still in contraction (47.9). If you source from smaller shops, lead-times and capacity are not yet constrained - your pricing leverage holds, but so does your responsibility to validate capacity for higher volumes.

 

Component categories most exposed. Tight-tolerance aluminum housings, stainless 304/316 brackets with surface treatment, and EDM-worked copper components will see earlier capacity-pulls than rough-machined carbon-steel parts. Plan Q4 procurement around this hierarchy.

 

Buyer's Decision Window - Three Scenarios

If you need aluminum parts in Q4

Aluminum's cost floor has moved. The combination of multi-decade LME inventory lows and a softening dollar means the ¥24,000 SHFE level holds as a near-term floor even if Q4 demand fails to outperform. Quote now, lock quantities, and confirm whether your supplier's quote is indexed to spot aluminum or fixed for the run. Fixed-price contracts avoid the pass-through risk if aluminum pushes higher; indexed contracts give you a cheaper cost if aluminum retraces.

 

If you need steel or stainless parts in Q4

The most stable category remains steel. Equipment manufacturing PMI at 51.4 means capacity for steel-plate brackets and housings will fill first as the recovery broadens. Lead-time risk, not material cost, is the variable to manage here. Get on the schedule early in the quarter rather than waiting for mid-Q4 deadlines.

 

If you source copper-, brass-, or EDM-worked parts

Copper on the LME has eased modestly off its highs but stays supportive near multi-year resistance; aluminum-bronze alloys track aluminum's move. EDM electrode cost is moderately up. Validate whether your EDM-processed parts are priced on copper weight or piece-rate - the answer changes the timing of any cost pass-through.

The next two weeks matter. Two data points will determine whether the September buyer's window extends or closes early: the September Caixin manufacturing PMI release (typically around September 30–October 1) and the weekly SHFE inventory print on September 11. If SHFE aluminum inventory breaks the ten-week destreak, the cost floor has cracked and a flatter aluminum-price regime follows - bullish for buyers. If destocking continues and processing fees stay soft, the window widens further.
