1. Selecting the Appropriate Welding Method
The choice of welding method is crucial in titanium alloy processing. For thin plates under 3 mm thick, tungsten inert gas welding is recommended, as its precise control ensures flawless welds. For plates thicker than 3 mm, consumable inert gas welding (CIG) is preferred due to its efficient melting capacity. Advanced techniques such as submerged arc welding and vacuum electron beam welding are also options, but the specific choice depends on the processing requirements and material properties.
2. Meticulous Pre-weld Preparation
1. Surface Cleaning:
Mechanical Cleaning: Use fine sandpaper, a stainless steel wire brush, or a carbide scraper to thoroughly remove oxide films and impurities from the weld area.
Chemical Cleaning: Use a specifically formulated pickling solution (such as an HF+HNO3 mixture) for deep cleaning, followed by rinsing with clean water and drying to ensure a residue-free surface.

2. Equipment and Material Preparation:
Select a DC TIG welding power source with high-frequency arc ignition and stable external characteristics to ensure a stable welding process. Argon purity must be above 99.99% and supplied continuously until the weld is completely cooled to prevent oxidation.
The welding wire should match the base metal composition, or, if needed, a slightly lower strength wire should be used to improve weld plasticity.
III. Careful Welding Process
1. Gas Shielding: Use a dedicated shield to protect the weld area and weld from harmful gases, while maintaining the temperature below 250°C.
2. Precise Welding: Maintain a small angle between the welding wire and the workpiece, feed it smoothly into the weld pool, and avoid large lateral swings to ensure weld uniformity and quality.
3. Continuous Shielding: When the arc is broken and the weld is finished, continue supplying argon shielding until the weld and heat-affected zone cool to a safe temperature.
IV. Strict Weld Inspection
Observing the weld color provides a preliminary assessment of weld quality. Ideal welds should be silvery white or light yellow. Dark yellow and golden purple have varying degrees of acceptance depending on the weld grade. Dark blue indicates substandard weld quality and requires rework or repair. V. Important Precautions
1. Strictly control welding parameters to ensure process stability and weld quality.
2. Maintain a clean welding environment to prevent contaminants from entering the welding area.
3. Welders must undergo professional training and be proficient in the welding characteristics and operating procedures of titanium alloys.
By following the above steps and precautions, you will be able to successfully achieve perfect welding of titanium and titanium alloys, ensuring that your titanium alloy products have excellent performance and reliability.
