Titanium alloy is an excellent structural and functional metal material with the features of low density, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, non-magnetic and good biocompatibility. With the rapid development of chemical, new energy, electronics and other industries, precision titanium foil and strip and its products are widely used. Conventional titanium strip and sheet thickness is generally in the 0.3mm or more, the current application is more mature. Industry generally refers to titanium strips with a thickness of 0.01 to 0.3mm as precision titanium foil strips. Precision titanium foil strip has excellent chemical properties, mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy and surface properties, and its thickness is even measured in microns to meet the requirements of use, mainly used in chemical fillers, new energy, 3C electronics, etc. In 2018, the domestic production of titanium strip coils was about 18,000t, accounting for 30% of the national production of titanium processed materials, which is one of the main titanium products in China, but the thickness of precision titanium foil strip below 0.3mm accounted for about 20% of the national production of titanium processed materials, and it is one of the main titanium products in China. However, the thickness of 0.3mm or less precision titanium foil and strip accounted for less than 5% of the titanium strip coil.
Compared with stainless steel, titanium material, high strength, rolling resilience, work hardening, and poor thermal conductivity, prone to belt breakage, rolling cracks and waves and other plate defects, as well as metallurgical defects triggered by the peeling, holes and other quality problems, so titanium tape and coil material preparation is difficult. Especially for the thickness of ≤ 0.3 mm precision titanium foil strip, its plate shape and internal and external quality control is more difficult. At present, precision titanium foil and strip products are mainly imported by Japan Nippon Steel, the overall quality of domestically produced titanium material still has a certain gap with Nippon Steel, especially the width of 200mm or more high-quality wide-width precision titanium foil and strip preparation is still immature, and there is a significant gap with the international advanced level. It is mainly reflected in the yield rate, thickness accuracy, plate shape and quality stability, etc. It is necessary to improve the production level of high-quality precision titanium foil and strip in China through the improvement of equipment, process and quality control. This project aims to provide reference for the application of ultra-thin and wide precision titanium foil strips by carrying out research on surface quality, organisational properties and plate shape technology.
Ultra-thin and wide precision titanium foil strips have a promising application in hydrogen energy and fuel cells, chemical industry, 3C and other fields, but it is difficult to prepare them due to their high dimensional accuracy, thin thickness, and wide bandwidth. By studying the surface quality, organisational properties and plate shape of ultra-thin and wide precision titanium foil strips, an ultra-thin and wide precision titanium foil strip with a nominal thickness of 0.1mm and a width of 420mm was obtained. The chemical composition, microstructure, mechanical properties and forming properties of the titanium foil strips were analysed, and the market application direction of the precision titanium foil strips was indicated.
