There are many brands of titanium and titanium alloys, including industrial pure titanium Gr1, Gr2, Gr3, Gr4, titanium alloys Gr7, Gr11, Gr5, Gr23, Gr12, Ti 5Al-2.5Sn, etc. The properties of different brands of titanium alloys may vary greatly. How to choose the grade of titanium alloy suitable for industrial use? What are the differences and applicable scenarios of these brands?
Industrial pure titanium
Gr1 Titanium is the first of four grades of commercially pure titanium. It is the softest and most malleable of these grades. It has maximum formability, excellent corrosion resistance and high impact toughness. Because of all these qualities, Grade 1 titanium is the material of choice for any application that requires ease of forming, and is commonly used as titanium plate and titanium tube.
Also available for:
Chemical processing, chlorate manufacturing, dimensionally stable anodes, desalination, construction, medical industry, marine industry, automotive components, airframe structures.
Gr2 Titanium: Due to its diversity and wide availability, Grade 2 Titanium is known as the "workhorse" of the commercial pure titanium industry. It has many of the same qualities as grade 1 titanium, but is slightly stronger. Both have equal corrosion resistance. This grade has good weldability, strength, ductility and formability. This makes grade 2 titanium rods and sheets the first choice for many applications: construction, power generation, medical industry, hydrocarbon processing, marine industry, exhaust pipe shrouds, airframe skins, desalination, chemical processing, chlorates manufacture.
Gr3 titanium, this grade uses at least commercially pure titanium grades, but that doesn't make it any less valuable. Grade 3 is stronger than grades 1 and 2, with similar ductility and only slight formability, but it has higher mechanical properties than its predecessors. Grade 3 is for applications requiring moderate strength and primary corrosion resistance. These include: aerospace structures, chemical processing, medical industry, marine industry.
Gr4 Titanium, Grade 4 is considered the strongest of the four commercially pure titaniums. It is also known for its excellent corrosion resistance, good formability and weldability. Although commonly used in industrial applications, grade 4 titanium alloys have more recently found their place in medical grade titanium alloys.
It is required in applications requiring high strength:Airframe components, cryogenic vessels, heat exchangers, CPI equipment, condenser tubes, surgical hardware, pickling baskets.
Titanium alloy
Gr7 Titanium is mechanically and physically identical to Grade 2 except that the interstitial element palladium has been added to alloy it. Grade 7 offers excellent weldability and performance and is the most corrosion resistant of all titanium alloys. In fact, it is the most corrosion resistant of the reducing acids. Class 7 is used for chemical process and production equipment components. Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in reducing acidic environments.
Gr11 titanium, corrosion resistant, can be used to prevent crevice corrosion and reduce acid in chloride environments. Other useful properties include optimum ductility, cold formability, useful strength, impact toughness and excellent weldability. This alloy can be used in the same titanium applications as Grade 1, especially where corrosion is required eg: chemical processing, chlorate manufacturing, desalination, marine applications.
Ti 6Al-4V or grade 5 titanium is known as the "workhorse" of titanium alloys and is the most commonly used of all titanium alloys. Accounting for 50% of the world's total titanium consumption.
Its usability lies in its many benefits. Ti 6Al-4V can be heat treated to increase its strength. It can be used in welded structures operating at temperatures up to 600°F. This alloy combines high strength, light weight, good formability and high corrosion resistance.
The availability of Ti 6AI-4V makes it the alloy of choice for several industries including aerospace, medical, marine and chemical processing industries. It can be used to create the following technical content:
aircraft turbine
engine parts
aircraft structural parts
Aerospace fasteners
High performance automation parts
Marine applications
Sports Equipment
Ti 6AL-4V ELI or Grade 5 is a higher purity form of Ti 6Al-4V. It can be made into coil, strand, wire or flat wire. It is the first choice for any occasion that requires high strength, light weight, good corrosion resistance and high toughness. It has excellent damage tolerance to other alloys.
These advantages make the Gr23 grade the ultimate dental and medical grade of titanium. Due to its biocompatibility, good fatigue strength and low modulus, it can be used in biomedical applications such as implantable components.
It can also be used for detailed surgical procedures such as:
Orthopedic nails and screws
orthopedic cable
ligation clip
surgical implants
Orthodontic appliances
in joint replacement surgery
cryogenic container
bone fixation device
