The plastic processing methods for titanium materials, including cold and hot processing, are key steps in transforming titanium ingots into various processed forms (such as sheets, rods, tubes, wires, profiles, and forgings). These methods not only give titanium metal usable shapes but also improve its microstructure and enhance its overall performance.
Titanium material plastic processing exhibits some notable characteristics, such as high deformation resistance, poor plasticity at room temperature, a high yield-to-tensile strength ratio, significant springback during deformation, and a tendency to adhere to molds during processing. These characteristics make the plastic processing of titanium relatively challenging, necessitating the use of heated deformation processing in most cases.
Among the basic plastic deformation methods for titanium materials, forging holds a critical position. Forging is a processing method in which billets or ingots are plastically deformed under the action of forging equipment and tools (or molds) to obtain forgings with specific geometric dimensions, shapes, and properties. Forging is not only used to break down titanium ingots into intermediate billets but also serves as an independent process for producing products such as rods, forgings, and die forgings. Depending on the process, forging can be further classified into conventional forging, precision forging, and isothermal forging.




Rolling is another commonly used plastic processing method for titanium materials. It utilizes the pressure of rotating rolls to induce continuous plastic deformation in the metal material, thereby achieving the desired cross-sectional shape and altering its properties. The rolling process is often employed to produce titanium and titanium alloy sheets, rods, tubes, and profiles.
Extrusion involves placing a billet in an extrusion container and applying pressure to force the metal material to flow through a die orifice, forming a workpiece with the same cross-section as the die opening. Depending on the direction of metal flow, extrusion can be classified into forward extrusion and backward extrusion.
Drawing is a processing method where tensile force is applied to the metal material, forcing it through a die orifice to obtain the desired cross-sectional shape and dimensions. Drawing is commonly used in the production of rods, tubes, and wires and can be divided into solid drawing and hollow drawing.
In addition to the aforementioned plastic processing methods, welding is also an important processing technology for titanium alloys. Welding methods include fusion welding, brazing, solid-state bonding, and mechanical joining, with fusion welding being the most widely used. Fusion welding can be further subdivided into arc welding, electron beam welding, resistance welding, and more. Among these, inert gas (primarily argon) shielded welding, also known as argon arc welding, is the most commonly used method.
