What is Titanium Alloy?

A titanium alloy is a mixture of titanium and other elements, which can include metals like aluminum, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, and others. These alloys are designed to improve the properties of pure titanium, such as:

Strength

Corrosion Resistance

Workability

Heat Resistance

Common Titanium Alloys:

Titanium-6Al-4V (Grade 5): This is the most widely used titanium alloy, combining titanium with 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. It offers an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability, rendering it perfect for aerospace, medical, and industrial uses.

Titanium-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23): A version of Grade 5 with lower levels of interstitial elements, making it more suitable for medical implants due to its enhanced biocompatibility.

Titanium-0.2Pd(Grade 7):An alpha titanium alloy made by adding a small amount of the precious metal palladium to commercially pure titanium. It is mainly used in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid and high-concentration chloride environments.

Is Titanium an Alloy?

Titanium itself is not an alloy; it is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a metal known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and high melting point. However, titanium is frequently used in the form of titanium alloys.

What is in Titanium Alloy?

A titanium alloy is a combination of titanium and other elements, which are added to enhance its properties for specific applications. The addition of alloying elements allows titanium to achieve a balance of strength, weight, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and other characteristics, depending on the needs of the industry or application.

How Strong is Titanium?

Titanium alloys have excellent strength, especially considering their light weight and corrosion resistance. While not as strong as the highest-strength steels, titanium alloys are often preferred in aerospace, military, medical, and marine applications because they combine strength with low density, corrosion resistance, and the ability to perform under extreme conditions. The specific strength of titanium alloys depends on their composition and heat treatment process.

What is Grade of Titanium?

Titanium is divided into several different grades based on its chemical composition, mechanical properties and application areas. The main grades include: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), Grade 7, Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V), Grade 11, Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni), and Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI).

Grade 1 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium

Grade 1 Titanium has a purity of up to 99.5%. Among the various grades we offer, Titanium Grade 1 is known for its plasticity and ductility compared to other grades. It not only has ultra-lightweight and excellent forming ability but also exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and high impact toughness, which is particularly suitable for applications that require long-term contact with human tissue or harsh environments.

Application: Petrifaction Plant, Medical implants, Marine Applications, Consumer Goods, etc

Standard: ASTM B265, ASTM B348, ASTM B381, ISO5832-2, ASTM F67, ASTM B861, ASTM B863, ASTM B862, ANSI B16.5, DIN 912, etc.

Grade 2 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium

As the leader of commercially pure titanium materials, Grade 2 Titanium stands out from many products with its excellent strength performance, widely meeting various application requirements. Compared with Grade 1 Titanium, Grade 2 is superior in strength, and has excellent weldability, strength and ductility, so it is widely regarded as the preferred material in the industrial field.

Application: Desalination, Pipelines , Kitchen equipment, Chemical processing, Electroplating, etc

Standard: ASTM B265, ASTM B348, ASTM B381, ISO5832-2, ASTM F67, ASTM B861, ASTM B863, ASTM B862, ANSI B16.5, DIN 912, etc.

Shape: Plate, Sheet, Strip, Foil, Bar / Rod, Tube / Pipe, Wire, Forging, Flange,Fasteners

Grade 3 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium

Grade 3 Titanium's excellent performance characteristics are mainly reflected in its high strength and good corrosion resistance. Compared with the common Grade 1 and Grade 2 titanium, Grade 3 has significantly improved in strength and reached a higher mechanical performance standard. Although its formability is slightly reduced, this does not affect its important applications in many key fields.

Application: Artificial joints and orthopedic implants, Medical devices, Seawater corrosion pipelines, Valves, Chemical industry, etc

Standard: ASTM B265, ASTM B348, ASTM B381, ISO5832-2, ASTM F67, ASTM B861, ASTM B863, ASTM B862, ANSI B16.5, DIN 912, etc.

Shape: Plate, Flange,Sheet, Tube / Pipe,Strip, Forging,Bar / Rod, Wire.

Grade 4 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium

Grade 4 Titanium's chemical composition is characterized by a relatively high content of oxygen and iron. This characteristic reduces its plasticity while significantly increasing its tensile strength.

Application: Medical applications, Shipbuilding and offshore engineering, Chemical and petrochemical industries, 3C electronic equipment, etc

Standard: ASTM B265, ASTM B348, ASTM B381, ISO5832-2, ASTM F67, ASTM B863, ANSI B16.5, DIN 912, etc.

Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V): Titanium Alloy

Grade 5 titanium, or Ti-6A|4V, is one of the most widely used titanium alloys due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. It contains aluminum and vanadium, which give it strength while maintaining the key features of titanium, like corrosion resistance and lightweight.

Application: Aerospace (aircraft structural, fasteners, and engine parts),Military industry (manufacturing gun barrels, cannon barrels, armored vehicles, and missile parts),Medical industry (manufacturing surgical implants, prosthetics, and orthopedic devices)

Standard: ASTM B348, AMS 4928, ASME SB381, ASTM B381, GB/T 16598, AMS 4920B, ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47 ASTM F468, DIN 933, DIN912, DIN931, DIN913, DIN7991, ASTM F1472,etc

Grade 7 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium plus 0.12 to 0.25% palladium

An alpha titanium alloy made by adding a small amount of the precious metal palladium to commercially pure titanium. The addition of palladium greatly enhances the alloy's corrosion resistance in reducing media and improves its corrosion resistance in oxidizing media.

Application: reactors, autoclaves, heat exchangers, valves, centrifuges, separators. etc. in various highly corrosive environments

Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V):Titanium Alloy

Grade 9 titanium, or Ti-3A-2.5V titanium, is a medium-strength titanium alloy product between pure titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy. It has excellent properties such as high specific strength, low density, good corrosion resistance, and small linear expansion coefficient, so it is widely used in high-end transportation equipment such as aerospace.

Grade 11 Titanium: Unalloyed titanium plus 0.12 to 0.25% palladium

Grade 11 titanium, like Grade 7 titanium, has a small amount of palladium added to pure titanium. The main differences between them are reflected in their chemical composition and properties. Specifically, Grade 11 titanium has a lower oxygen content, which gives it better ductility and stronger resistance to crack growth. Therefore, it is usually used in applications that require good cold working properties and corrosion resistance. In contrast, Grade 7 titanium contains higher oxygen and iron, enhancing its strength and tensile properties but reducing some ductility.
