FAQ

1. Is ASTM B337 still valid for titanium pipe?
No, ASTM B337 is withdrawn and no longer valid. This specification for titanium pipe has been replaced. For seamless titanium pipe, use ASTM B861. For welded titanium pipe, use ASTM B862. ASTM B338 remains active for heat exchanger tubes.

2. What ASTM specification covers Grade 1 titanium for surgical implants?
ASTM F67 Grade 1 is the correct specification for commercially pure titanium surgical implants. Do not use ASTM B338 or ASTM B861 for implant applications as they lack biocompatibility testing requirements. ASTM F136 covers 6Al-4V ELI alloy for higher strength implant applications.

3. What is the German equivalent of ASTM Grade 1 titanium?
The German W.Nr. (Werkstoffnummer) equivalent of ASTM Grade 1 titanium is WS 3.7024 or WS 3.7025. The French equivalent is T35. British specifications include AMS 4940 and MIL-T-9046J CP4. All refer to the same commercially pure titanium with low oxygen and iron content.

4. What is the difference between ASTM F67 and ASTM F136?
ASTM F67 covers commercially pure titanium in Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 for surgical implants. These grades offer good ductility and corrosion resistance but lower strength. ASTM F136 covers 6Al-4V ELI (extra low interstitial) titanium alloy, which provides much higher strength for load-bearing implants like hip stems.

5. What is the French equivalent of Grade 5 (6Al-4V) titanium?
The French equivalent of standard Grade 5 (6Al-4V) titanium is T-A6V. The ELI (extra low interstitial) version, which is used for surgical implants, is T-A6VE. The German W.Nr. for Grade 5 is WS 3.7164 for aerospace applications or WS 3.7165 for general use.

6. Which titanium specifications have been withdrawn?
ASTM B337 for titanium pipe is withdrawn. Many British specifications are also withdrawn including TA14 through TA17, TA18 through TA20, TA25 through TA27, TA29 through TA37, TA38 through TA44, TA45 through TA51, and TA52 through TA59. Always check current status before ordering.

7. What ASTM specifications cover Grade 9 (3Al-2.5V) titanium?
Grade 9 titanium (3Al-2.5V) is covered by ASTM B265 for sheet and plate, ASTM B348 for bar, ASTM B367 for castings, and ASTM B381 for forgings. US military specifications include AMS 4943, AMS 4944, and MIL-T-9046J AB-5 for this grade.

8. What is the German equivalent of Grade 2 titanium?
The German W.Nr. equivalent of ASTM Grade 2 titanium is WS 3.7034 or WS 3.7035. The French equivalent is T40 or T40 AIR 9182. British specifications include TA1, TA2, DTD 5073, and IMI 125 for this commercially pure grade.

9. Is ASTM B338 still active for titanium tubes?
Yes, ASTM B338 remains fully active and has not been withdrawn. It covers seamless and welded titanium tubes for heat exchangers and condensers in Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 12. This is one of the most commonly used specifications for titanium tube orders.

10. What ASTM spec covers Grade 6 (5Al-2.5Sn) titanium?
Grade 6 titanium (5Al-2.5Sn) is an alpha titanium alloy. It is covered by ASTM B265 for sheet and plate, ASTM B348 for bar, ASTM B367 for castings, and ASTM B381 for forgings. The British specification is DTD 5083. German W.Nr. is WS 3.7114.

11. What is the British specification for Grade 1 titanium?
The British and US military specifications for Grade 1 titanium are AMS 4940 and MIL-T-9046J CP4. The specification AMS-T-9046B CP4 is also listed. These cover commercially pure titanium for aerospace and general engineering applications.
