Titanium and its forms such as titanium bars, tubes, and plates-are widely used in aerospace, chemical processing, and medical fields because of their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. But have you ever wondered how titanium behaves when exposed to air at different temperatures?
What makes titanium so corrosion-resistant is the formation of a stable oxide layer on its surface. However, this protection is not constant across all temperatures. Your understanding of how titanium reacts with air-especially oxygen (O₂), nitrogen (N₂), and hydrogen (H₂)-at various temperatures is essential for ensuring long-term performance and safety.
Low-Temperature Stability (Room Temp to ~500°C)
When you're working with dense titanium products like bars, tubes, or plates, rest assured that they remain very stable in air up to about 500°C.
At these temperatures:
A thin, compact oxide film (mainly titanium dioxide, TiO₂) gradually forms on the surface.
This film serves as a strong physical barrier, preventing oxygen from penetrating deeper into the titanium.
You'll notice a color shift-from pale yellow to blue-on the surface as the temperature increases, visually representing changes in the film's thickness.
Mid-Temperature Transition (~500°C to 700°C)
Once the environment exceeds 500°C, the behavior of titanium begins to change:
The oxide film starts to lose stability and partially dissolves.
Oxygen diffusion increases, but mostly stays near the surface layer.
Up to 700°C, the film still offers partial protection, although it weakens progressively.
This is a critical range where you should closely evaluate your application's temperature demands to ensure your titanium parts remain effective and safe.

High-Temperature Acceleration (>700°C)
Going above 700°C? Be cautious.
Oxygen diffusion into the titanium accelerates drastically.
The oxide film becomes porous or breaks down completely.
Titanium starts reacting not only with oxygen but also with nitrogen and hydrogen, leading to:
Oxidation
Embrittlement due to oxygen and nitrogen
Hydrogen embrittlement, significantly compromising mechanical properties.
At these temperatures, uncontrolled exposure can lead to irreversible damage and structural failure.
The Role of Form: Why Titanium Powder Is a Special Case
The physical form of titanium dramatically affects its reactivity:
Dense titanium (bars, plates, tubes) follows the temperature-dependent rules above.
Titanium powder, on the other hand, is extremely reactive-even at room temperature.
Its huge surface area makes it highly susceptible to ignition.
Small sparks, static, or friction can cause violent combustion or even explosions.
You must follow strict anti-static and fire-safety procedures when handling it.
Unlike solid titanium, titanium powder should always be treated as a hazardous material.
Why You Should Always Consider Temperature When Using Titanium
When selecting titanium materials, especially for high-temperature applications, you must understand how temperature affects their reaction in air.
Below 500°C, titanium is safe and stable.
Between 500–700°C, caution is advised as the oxide film starts to weaken.
Above 700°C, the risk of rapid oxidation and material degradation increases dramatically.
If you're using or handling titanium powder, extra precautions are non-negotiable due to its explosive nature.

Titanium product packaging
We place great emphasis on the transportation safety and delivery quality of our products. All titanium materials are packaged using strict industrial-grade solutions: titanium tubes and bars undergo anti-rust treatment, are tightly wrapped with waterproof stretch film, and then placed in reinforced wooden or iron boxes lined with moisture-proof paper, with fillers added to prevent sliding and collisions during transportation. Titanium plates and strips are covered with protective film, fitted with edge protectors, separated layer by layer with moisture-proof paper, loaded onto sturdy wooden or steel pallets, and securely fastened with steel straps. Fine titanium wires are neatly coiled onto specialized spools and encapsulated in sealed boxes that are waterproof and dustproof. Each packaging unit is accompanied by clear product labels, material certificates, and moisture-proof indicators, ensuring that the goods remain intact, clearly labeled, and safely delivered to global customers through long-distance sea freight and multimodal transportation.
