Its chemical composition is: 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (maximum) iron, 0.2% (maximum) oxygen, with the remainder being titanium.
Its strength is significantly higher than commercially pure titanium (Grades 1-4), while offering similar stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity, which is approximately 60% lower for Grade 5 titanium than for CP titanium).
One of its many advantages is its heat treatability. This grade offers excellent strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability.
This alpha-beta alloy is a workhorse in the titanium industry. It is fully heat-treatable in cross-sections up to 15 mm and has a maximum operating temperature of approximately 400°C (750°F). Because it is the most commonly used alloy-over 70% of melt-molten grades are Ti6Al4V sub-grades-it is particularly well-suited for the aerospace industry, encompassing numerous aerospace airframe and engine components, as well as major non-aerospace applications such as marine, offshore, and power generation.
Additions of 0.05% palladium (grade 24), 0.1% ruthenium (grade 29), and 0.05% palladium and 0.5% nickel (grade 25) significantly improve corrosion resistance in reducing acids, chlorides, and sour environments, raising the corrosion temperature to over 200°C (392°F).
