Titanium, a metal with extremely active chemical properties, exhibits a strong affinity for oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other gases at high temperatures. This characteristic becomes particularly pronounced during titanium welding, as the temperature rises. Failure to strictly control the absorption and dissolution of these gases by titanium will undoubtedly pose significant challenges to the processing of titanium welded joints.
Significance of Titanium Welding Processing
In recent years, with the rapid development of China's economy, especially under the continuous advancement of reform and opening-up, the country's economic construction has achieved remarkable accomplishments. At the same time, significant progress has been made in welding processing technologies for pipelines and other engineering projects. As a common welding method, the quality control during titanium welding processing plays a crucial role in the formation of weld colors. The visual nature of weld colors provides important evidence for studying the relationship between weld color and welding quality in titanium welding processing.
Impact of Titanium's Properties on Titanium Welding Processing
Effects of Oxygen and Nitrogen: Oxygen and nitrogen form interstitial solid solutions in titanium, causing lattice distortion, increasing deformation resistance, and enhancing strength and hardness. However, they reduce plasticity and toughness. The presence of oxygen and nitrogen in the weld is detrimental and should be avoided as much as possible.
Effects of Hydrogen: An increase in hydrogen content sharply reduces the impact toughness of the titanium weld metal, with some reduction in plasticity. Additionally, hydrides can cause brittleness in the joint.
Effects of Carbon: At room temperature, carbon exists as an interstitial solid solution in titanium, increasing strength but reducing plasticity. When the carbon content exceeds the solubility limit, hard and brittle TiC is formed, distributed in a network pattern, which can easily cause cracks. Therefore, national standards stipulate that the carbon content in titanium and its alloys must not exceed 0.1%. During welding processing, it is essential to ensure that oil stains on the workpiece and welding wire are thoroughly cleaned to avoid increasing carbon content.
Analysis of Titanium's Weldability and Key Processing Points
Titanium has good weldability. Its low thermal conductivity ensures that only the area within the arc flame melts, with good fluidity. Additionally, titanium's small coefficient of thermal expansion further enhances its weldability. When performing titanium welding processing, the following points should be noted:
Protection of the Welding Zone and High-Temperature Areas After Welding: To prevent air from affecting the welding and high-temperature areas, strict protection of these areas is necessary. The use of 99.99% pure argon and a trailing protection shield is essential.
Processing Method of Weld Grooves: Weld grooves should be machined mechanically; grinding methods should not be used.
Avoidance of Spot Welding and Use of High-Frequency Arc Starting: Spot welding should be avoided as much as possible during the welding process, and high-frequency arc starting should be employed.
Control of Post-Weld Heat Treatment: Post-weld heat treatment should be avoided whenever possible. If necessary, the heat treatment temperature should be controlled below 650°C.

Relationship Between Weld Color and Quality in Titanium Welding Processing
Weld Color Changes and Their Defect Mechanisms: During titanium tube welding processing, the argon gas protection layer formed by the TIG welding torch can only protect the welding molten pool from the harmful effects of air. However, it does not protect the already solidified high-temperature weld and its adjacent areas. These areas still have a strong ability to absorb nitrogen and oxygen from the air. As oxidation gradually intensifies, the color of the titanium tube weld changes, and the plasticity of the weld decreases. The color changes sequentially as follows: silver-white (no oxidation), golden yellow (slight oxidation), blue (moderate oxidation), and gray (severe oxidation).
Judging Welding Quality by Weld Color: Experiments have shown that as the weld color darkens, indicating increased oxidation, the hardness of the weld also increases. Simultaneously, harmful substances such as oxygen and nitrogen in the weld increase, significantly reducing welding quality.
In summary, titanium welding processing is a complex and precise process that requires strict control of various factors to ensure welding quality. By deeply studying the properties and weldability of titanium, as well as mastering the correct processing points and precautions, we can better achieve high quality and efficiency in titanium welding processing.
