Unique Requirements for Titanium Alloy Forging Equipment
Due to their exceptional physical properties, titanium alloys impose higher demands on equipment during the forging process. Specifically, since the deformation resistance of titanium alloys is significantly greater than that of carbon structural steel, and their forging temperature range is relatively narrow, the equipment used for forging titanium alloys must possess greater capacity. These machines must complete more forging strikes per unit time, while a lower deformation speed facilitates the plastic deformation of titanium alloys, ensuring the quality of the forgings.
In practical applications, for large forgings, presses are preferred as they minimize sharp increases in deformation forces. For smaller cross-section forgings, forging hammers are favored due to their high-speed striking capability, which helps maintain forging temperatures and reduces the likelihood of cracking. However, caution is required when using forging hammers to avoid localized overheating and microstructural inhomogeneity in the forgings. Currently, titanium alloy forging equipment primarily includes electric air hammers, steam hammers, hydraulic presses, and fast forging oil hydraulic presses.
Deformation Characteristics of Titanium Alloys Under Different Forging Methods
During the forging of titanium alloys, controlling die temperature and pressure holding time is critical. In conventional forging, die temperature is typically set at 10%–35% of the forging temperature. In hot die forging, isothermal forging, and superplastic forging, die temperatures vary to ensure optimal deformation conditions.
Similarly, different forging methods require varying pressure holding times. Ranging from brief durations in conventional forging to several hours in superplastic forging, precise control of pressure holding time is key to ensuring the quality and performance of forgings.

Characteristics and Challenges of Titanium Alloy Casting Processes
Titanium alloy casting processes face numerous challenges, primarily due to their high deformation resistance, poor thermal conductivity, high viscosity, and low fluidity. These characteristics increase the difficulty of casting. However, by thoroughly preheating tools such as forging dies and tongs, and enhancing lubrication, these challenges can be effectively addressed, ensuring the quality and performance of the forgings.
Typical Forged Products of Titanium Alloys
Titanium alloy forged products are diverse, including bars, discs, rings, forgings, as well as forged slabs and billets. These products are widely used in aerospace, medical, and other fields, demonstrating the broad application prospects of titanium alloy forging technology.
Specifically, in terms of bars, several domestic companies have mastered internationally advanced titanium alloy bar forging technology, enabling them to produce round bars, square bars, and other products in various specifications and grades. For discs and rings, titanium alloy discs of multiple grades can be produced according to different standards, with a wide range of specifications. In terms of forgings, titanium processing enterprises typically provide forged billets for further processing by users or directly supply isothermal die forgings. Additionally, forged slabs and billets provide high-quality raw materials for hot rolling of plates, extrusion of tubes, and rolling of bars.
In summary, titanium and titanium alloy forging technology has garnered significant attention due to its unique physical properties and broad application prospects. By gaining a deeper understanding of the unique requirements for titanium alloy forging equipment, deformation characteristics under different forging methods, and the characteristics and challenges of casting processes, we can better master the essence of titanium alloy forging technology, providing strong support for the production and application of titanium alloy products.
