Titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace, military industry, civil industry, and other fields due to their excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance, good high-temperature performance, and biocompatibility. However, the relatively low surface hardness and insufficient wear resistance of titanium alloys limit their application in certain specific environments. To improve these properties, researchers have developed various surface treatment technologies to enhance the surface performance of titanium alloys.
Surface Oxidation Treatment
By forming an oxide layer, the lubricity of the titanium alloy surface is enhanced, reducing adhesion during the drawing process.
Coating Treatment
Graphite Emulsion Coating
Applying graphite emulsion before hot drawing not only provides lubrication but also protects the billet surface from oxidation. Requirements for the graphite emulsion include a graphite content of 20%-25%, a particle size of 1-3 μm, and uniform adhesion to the billet surface.
Lime-Salt Coating
A specially formulated lime-salt lubricating layer is used, such as 12% Na₂SO₄, 12% CaO, 0.3% Na₃PO₄, 0.2% NaCl, and the remainder water, supplemented with a mixture of 75% soap powder and 25% sulfur powder as a solid powdered lubricant.
Fluorophosphate Treatment
After physically cleaning the metal billet surface, it is immersed in a solution to form a modified coating, followed by the application of a solid lubricant to achieve a low friction coefficient and high wear resistance.
Metal Plating
A metal film, such as copper, chromium, nickel, or tin, is plated onto the titanium alloy surface to reduce direct metal contact during drawing, thereby minimizing adhesion.




Boriding Treatment
Titanium alloy wires are heated to boiling and immersed in a mixed solution containing KFB₄, BaCl₂, and NH₄NO₃, then cleaned and dried to generate a layer of fluoroborate on the surface. During cold heading, a layer of molybdenum disulfide is additionally applied as a lubricant.
Chemical Conversion Treatment
A dense chemical conversion film is formed on the titanium alloy surface through chemical conversion treatment. This film can act as a lubricating coating, adsorb lubricants, and ensure a smooth surface after multiple drawing passes without adhesion or scratches.
Lubricant Selection
Suitable lubricants, such as industrial soap powder, graphite emulsion, and mixtures of soap powder with other materials, should exhibit good wettability with coatings and excellent thermal stability.
Laser Surface Treatment
Laser treatment technologies, including laser cladding, laser surface alloying, and laser surface quenching, can improve wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and hardness by altering the microstructure of the surface layer. The advantage of laser treatment is that it significantly enhances surface properties without changing the bulk properties of the titanium alloy.
Micro-Arc Oxidation
This technology involves the in-situ growth of a ceramic film on the titanium alloy surface, forming a layer with excellent corrosion and wear resistance. Micro-arc oxidation is environmentally friendly and aligns with sustainable development strategies.
Ion Implantation
By injecting elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, or carbon into the titanium alloy surface, the hardness and wear resistance of the surface can be improved. The ion-implanted layer is typically nanoscale in thickness and can significantly enhance the surface properties of titanium alloys.
Thermal Diffusion Method
By diffusing alloying elements into the titanium alloy surface at high temperatures, an alloyed layer is formed, thereby improving surface hardness and wear resistance.
