Hardness is a key indicator of a material's ability to resist plastic deformation and directly affects the wear resistance and service life of the alloy. As a high-performance alloy material, the hardness characteristics of TA9 titanium alloy are closely related to its microstructure, alloy element content, and heat treatment processes.
In Vickers hardness tests, the hardness of TA9 titanium alloy typically ranges between 200 and 260 HV. Untreated TA9 titanium alloy has a Vickers hardness of approximately 230 HV. However, after annealing at about 500°C, its hardness slightly decreases to around 220 HV. This is primarily because the annealing process helps relieve internal stresses in the material, thereby increasing its toughness but correspondingly reducing its hardness.
Heat treatment processes significantly influence the hardness of TA9 titanium alloy. After quenching, the hardness of TA9 titanium alloy can reach a relatively high level of 260 HV, but this is accompanied by a reduction in material toughness. Therefore, in practical applications, heat treatment processes with stronger comprehensive properties are often selected to balance hardness and toughness. For example, by holding TA9 titanium alloy at 850°C for 2 hours followed by air cooling, its hardness can be stabilized at around 240 HV while maintaining good plasticity and strength.

In addition to heat treatment, cold working is also an effective method to improve the hardness of TA9 titanium alloy. Processes such as cold rolling and cold drawing can significantly enhance its hardness. Generally, the hardness of cold-worked TA9 titanium alloy can increase by about 15%–20%, reaching a Vickers hardness of over 280 HV. For instance, after cold rolling with a 50% deformation rate, the hardness of TA9 titanium alloy can rise to 285 HV, though its plasticity decreases accordingly. Thus, cold-worked TA9 titanium alloy is more suitable for applications requiring high hardness and low plasticity, such as fasteners and orthopedic implants.
In summary, the hardness characteristics of TA9 titanium alloy are influenced by various factors, including microstructure, alloy element content, heat treatment processes, and cold working methods. In practical applications, suitable process parameters must be selected based on specific requirements to balance performance indicators such as hardness, toughness, and plasticity.
